INTRODUCTION
Service Learning is a form of experiential learning that combines relevant community service experiences with reflective exercises, for a powerful learning experience that aligns with the curriculum and meets course credits. It is transformative learning, student centered, action oriented, and involves technology. Overall is fun.
Science, technology, engineering and mathematics play a key role in the sustained growth and stability of any economy, and are a critical component to helping children and young adults win the future. STEM education creates critical thinkers, increases science literacy, and enables the next generation of innovators. STEM activities are part of many Service Learning programs.
Service Learning programs require that schools have well-educated teachers, community support and a dynamic school leader, meeting the profile of an intrapreneur.
For 20 years Marta Vernet has been conceptualizing and celebrating Service Learning and STEM programs at ASB, enriching academic curricula and becoming a key attribute for children to acquire real-world skills to address the needs they will face in the future. Skills such as collaboration and teamwork, creativity and imagination, critical thinking and problem solving, perseverance and resilience.
To run these programs Marta creates meaningful partnerships with public institutions and private companies under the scope of Creating Shared Value (CSV). Michael Porter’s CSV aligns the search for profit of companies with the solution of social needs, for a mutual benefit. Companies such as Nestle is an excellent example of a private enterprise that embraces CSV as a core business, long term and sustainable strategy. Nestle partners with ASB’s ‘Sharing Experiences and Skills’ program.
ASB as institution is another great example of how to do good, while doing well. ASB’s Service Learning programs have not only supported the personal skills development of tens of thousands of students at the private school, but has also impacted more than 50,000 elementary students from 100 public schools in Barcelona (1), as well as students in the Peruvian Amazon and Botswana. Becoming in the process an asset for the school and the most valued educational program for parents making a choice to school their children.
These programs, among many more, influence students’ creativity, harness knowledge, involve technology, and are a unique tool for creating a new benchmark in critical thinking. This service and technology-driven, experiential teaching methodology empowers young people to shape communities and transform the world.
